I did my thesis on addiction. It's the area I care most about in this whole field. I've worked in it, studied it, and I know it from closer than the textbooks too, through things in my own life. And the biggest thing all of that taught me is that the hardest part of any struggle isn't the struggle itself. It's admitting you have a problem, and then owning up to it.

That goes for addiction, and it goes for everyday mental health as well. You don't need to hit rock bottom to get something out of talking to someone. But somehow we act like asking for help needs that level of justification before it's allowed.

Especially as a guy. I grew up with the same message most Irish lads did: whatever it is, deal with it yourself. Needing help meant you were weak, or you weren't coping the way everyone else supposedly was. So we say nothing and call it strength.

Having seen both sides of this, I'll say what I actually think. Deciding to work on yourself, actually booking that first session, is genuinely brave. I respect it so much, because I know how heavy that door is. It means admitting to yourself that you don't have all the answers.

And honestly, none of us do. That's a humbling thing to accept, but it's also just the truth, and it's a much better place to operate from than pretending otherwise. Checking in on how you're getting on, and where you could improve, isn't failure. You'd do it for your body, your job, your money. Your head deserves the same.

That's why we built BeeWell the way we did. Ella and I have both worked in this field, both studied it to master's level, and both been through our own hard chapters. We've been on both sides of the coin, as practitioners and as people. We know what good therapy looks like, we know what to look for in a therapist, and we know how confusing the search is when you're new to it or coming back after time away. If you've been carrying something on your own because that's what you were told to do, you were told wrong. Getting help isn't for broken people. It's for anyone who wants to get better at being themselves.
